Jacob's ladder is a spring-blooming wildflower of rich, maple-basswood forests. It grows on moist but not wet, loamy soils, especially where the soil surface is composed of a rich, dark humus (leaf mold). It generally produces a few stems per cluster and does not spread quickly on its own.
